Let There Be (Public) Light
Happy New Year! I've been catching up with my RSS feeds over the holidays, and I think that my first must-read recommendation of the new year will be this piece by Rep. Dennis Kucinich. It's an oddly Capraesque recounting of the fierce uphill struggle he had to wage while mayor of Cleveland to keep the city's electric utility in public hands—a victorious struggle that ultimately saved the people of Cleveland hundreds of millions and that offers a lesson in the pitfalls of "privatization" to anyone with ears to hear.
